It’s Monday, so pass the damn cheese…. please!

January 12, 2004 By: bio Category: General

Well it’s Monday and the server has been up for a record breaking 4 days! Massive kudos to go Jester (hey… that’s my web page you bastard!) and his wacked mad skillz with linux!

We went out to Joe’s Place on Saturday night. Joe’s Place is an exclusive lounge… invitation only type palce. We were invited and had a blast! I guess it helps to know the right people. Of course, when we got home, I slipped on the ice in my driveway and landed face first on the pavement. My forehead is missing a chunk where my wrist watch made contact (the watch is toast too… gotta buy a new one).

Yesterday, I spent 6 hours working on a website for my neighbor: bonesbros.com. I’m gonna tear it all out and start over, because it looks like a monster pile of ass. Then again, I think everything I make looks that way… so perhaps I should get a second opinion (my neighbor likes it… maybe I should listen to him and let it go at that).

Back at the grindstone today: Calvin is out sick so I’m doing double duty… all of his tasks with the servers as well as mine. Busy day! In between all the work things I do to get paid, I’m still tweaking on the server (with the help of Jester), trying to get it finished. You still can’t pop the mail off, but it looks like the spam blocking software is coming along nicely. Hopefully this will help keep the users inboxes a lot cleaner. It won’t, however, lower the insane amount of mail that hits my server in a day.

I wonder if I can sue the spammers for lost bandwidth?

In local news: Spokane, WA was voted the Cheesiest City in the Nation!! We eat more cheese, per capita, than any other city in the US. And were not talking by a little. The average Spokanite consumes around 10.4 pounds (4.72 kg) of cheese in a year. The national average is 7 pounds (3.18 kg) of cheese per year. Last year alone, the city of Spokane consumed an estimated 2,080,000 pounds (943,472.13 kg) of cheese.

That’s 1,040 tons. Of cheese.

I wonder how many tons of laxatives we consume (to remove all that cheese).

Welcome to the dark

It’s Friday morning and all is not well.

When Jess was dropping his son off at the daycare next to where we work, we saw a power cable on the ground and utility workers scrambling around it.

After dropping him off and heading into work, it was obvious that there were problems. All the lights are off.

So… there’s no latté for me this morning, the servers that weren’t on UPS are goofed, and life in general is lovely.

I knew I should have called in sick today.

Server news: we hope to have pop3 and ftp installed and configured today. Additional project (if there’s time): Spam Assassin.

We’re back (kinda)

You may have noticed that we’ve been gone for a while.

Last Saturday, the pixelthugs server had a hardware failure which took out the main drive. Unfortunately, that drive contained most of the system.

We were able to recover a small amount of data from the drive prior to it’s death, but an incredible amount was lost. For those of you whom I host, the following information was lost:

  • Email – all of it
  • Address books
  • Passwords

The following domains were also lost:

  • pixelthugs.com
  • shitdanish.com
  • slackeruncensored.com

I own the first two, I hope that the owner of the third has a local backup.

I’ve taken steps to verify that this never happens again (lessons learned and all that stuffs). The server has been replaced with an HP Netserver NH3. It’s got a 5 disk RAID-5 array, redundant power supplies, yadda, yadda, yadda. We should be good go go.

As of right now, all domains are up and running (mostly). Email should also be online by the end of the day…. but it’s gonna be different than before. You’ll need to contact me for a new password.

I’ll post a picture of the new bad boy just as soon as ftp gets set up 🙂

  • Happy New Year

    It’s finally 2004.

This makes me extremely happy, as it’s an election year. Hopefully the American public won’t tolerate what happened last time and we’ll actually elect the official the majority votes for rather than have one appointed for us.

    One can hope anyway.

New Years Eve was pretty slow at Casa de Toné. We watched Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Years Eve and drank Champagne at the appropriate time. Other than that, not much went on.

Today is “clean up day”. We’re removing the Christmastm tree and boxing up the ornaments and other various decorations.

Other than that, not much to report.
